Am I really supposed to take articles that talk about "Ricky Birdsong" seriously?

Hey guys, why did no one tell me that we beat tech in the 2009 Fcs playoffs?!

"Withers will look to lead the Dukes back to the status the program enjoyed in 2008, when it ranked No. 1 for much of the season with Payton Award finalist Rodney Landers under center. The next season would see the Dukes knock off a Top 15 ranked Virginia Tech Hokies (21-16) in the postseason"

RE: Early 2014 Football Ranking - JMU #21 - JMUSuperfan2000 - 05-27-2014 05:59 PM

There is absolutely no reason with the resources at JMU that we should ever be out of the top 10, especially with the recent defections to FBS.

As BDK says "Preseason polls are as useful as tits on a bull."

Says we were 7-5 last year and Ricky Birdsong was our QB. Wrong.

Hopefully this year will change that. I think we have everything we need for a national championship. If we are a one and done in the playoffs I would call that a big disappointment this season.

Finally, someone singing my song. Though, we do have this very same discussion every year.

The only way we'll host is if we get a seed...

I was going to put up our other rankings, then realized we're unranked in all of them except Athlon.

Toughest conference in the FCS.

We need a competent defense for any hopes at a championship. The secondary was brutal last year and it doesn't look like it'll be much better this year.

I agree that we'll be better than last year, especially on the offensive side of the ball. I do worry about how quickly all of these transfers can gel with the current players and new coach. I hope the transfers don't get plagued by "Dream Team" mentality and think that they'll waltz through this season. The schedue should be rough and there is a decent chance the Dukes start 1-3.

We're really flying about as blind as one could be right now. On paper? Yea, things look pretty well set up for an exciting season, but who really knows? Maybe Ricky Birdsong can offer an opinion if someone can track that cat down.

Can Withers Coach? As in HEAD Coach? Will his prior experience translate to better DB play? Will the Hessians blend into a smooth running unit, or a bunch of individual "stars"? Will MM recruits respond to the new Coach and his Assts?

Lot's of unknowns out there, ready to get this things started!

There are people in this board that will be saying 2010 to their VT coworkers in 2025. The sad part, VT fans (those I work with) already feel sorry for JMU fans and let it slide without challenge. It's like the fat accountant in the basement talking about how he took a thin chick to prom in high school while all the trapped listeners in the office kitchen try to bail on the conversation. I expect Bourne is this guy at AD events if he even goes anymore...he skipped on the NCAA tourney after months of the most optimistic amongst us forecasted Bourne would be there selling JMU to the MAC/CUSA.

Athletic programs that don't have a bright future (a Bourne/Alger led JMU) live in the past.

RE: Early 2014 Football Ranking - JMU #21 - brizzock - 05-28-2014 11:57 AM

I think we're going to see a much more talented, dynamic bunch of players on the field this year. I expect energy, discipline, and exciting football. I'd be shocked if we lose more than 3 games--just my opinion. My disdain for staying FCS doesn't change my opinion that I think we could be a solid playoff contender this year. I do worry about Withers being able to consistently attract BCS talent once he's a year or two out of the big leagues, and JMU is still in I-AA though. But, that's a conversation for a later date. I think we have a great year this year.
